It depends on what's in the file. The upload itself is the exposure — not whether the company turns out to misuse it. For anything sensitive, "no upload" beats "trust us."
What actually happens when you click "upload"
Your browser sends the file over the internet to a server the tool's company runs. That server now has a full, readable copy of your document — for minutes, hours or longer. It does the work there and sends a result back.
Somewhere along the way, your file sits on infrastructure you've never seen, run by people you've never met, under terms of service you probably didn't read.
When it's fine, and when it isn't
The risk isn't yes-or-no. It grows with what's in the document.
A recipe, a public flyer, an empty CV template. Upload freely — there's nothing to protect.
A signed contract, a medical record, a tax document, anything under NDA. The upload itself is the exposure — worth avoiding whatever the company promises.
If you do upload, check these first
- Deletion policy. Does the privacy policy name an actual time frame, or just say "we take privacy seriously"?
- Who else sees it. Is the file used to train AI models, shared with "partners" or handled by a subcontractor?
- Encryption in transit. HTTPS is the bare minimum. No HTTPS is an instant red flag.
- Compliance claims. "HIPAA compliant" without a signed Business Associate Agreement isn't compliance — it's marketing.
The alternative: tools that never upload
A newer kind of tool — StayPutPDF included — does the work inside your browser tab instead of on a server. There's no deletion policy to read, because there's nothing to delete.
It matters most when the reason you'd upload is to hide something: sending the unredacted original to a server so it can black out a name is backwards. You can redact a PDF locally instead.
